40 Days of Dating: A Love Story?

What do you do when you’re tired of the prospect of dating? Two good friends with opposite relationship problems found themselves single at the same time. As an experiment, they dated for 40 days.

GDUSA named both Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman  as People to Watch in 2013. I guess we were right on the mark because now you can watch them for the next 40 days as they go through the motions of a relationship and hopefully overcome all the fears and inadequacies that go hand in hand with the New York City dating scene.

Tim is afraid of commitment, often dating many girls at once, and he’s losing sight of what a healthy relationship means. Jessica is a hopeless romantic, jumping into relationships too quickly, always looking to find “the one.” It’s been said that it takes 40 days to change a bad habit. Tim and Jessica will for the next 40 days explore all the trials and tribulations of a relationship: the commitment, time, companionship, joys and frustrations.

Everyday was documented with a questionnaire that they filled out. They also gave themselves rules to obey: they had to see each other everyday, they saw a couples therapist once a week and had to go on one weekend trip together.

They also did projects within the 40 days. On Day 5 they explored  past relationships and dating history via art and drawings. On Day 26 they asked 80 students to fill out a question, “What do relationships mean to you?” and documented the responses. On Day 31, they held hands for 8 hours straight, never letting go (even when we had to go to the bathroom!), and explored the city while capturing it on film.

As an added bonus, Jessica and Tim asked fellow designers, illustrators and artists to contribute a typographic piece for each post that will live on the website to represent each day. Contributors include Paula Scher, Eike Konig/Hort, Debbie Millman, Julia Rothman, Christoph Niemann, Brian Collins, Jessica Hische, Mario Hugo, Mike Perry, Siggi Eggertson, Joshua Davis, Dana Tanamachi, among many others.

Can they help each other, or will they fall into their same habits? Will they damage their friendship? What if they fall in love?  You can watch it all as it unfolds at www.fortydaysofdating.com.

I hope reality tv syndrome doesn’t wreck the experiment for them. In my experience, it takes WAY more than 40 days to change the way you relate to others in a relationship. I think the 40 day rule might apply to a bad habit like chewing your fingernails… but changing the way our past experiences manifest in a relationship with another person who also has their own past experiences etc…?? Even if you’re fully committed to the process I think it takes WAY longer. They aren’t setting themselves up for success. But I wish them the best and if they get something out of it, good enough.
